Cover Story: Understanding the composition of MSW can lead to better waste management. New York State has never had a state-wide waste characterization program. In 2021, 23 tonnes of MSW were sorted for 42 constituents at 11 locations, representing 25% of the state population outside of New York City. The disposed MSW comprised 22.8% paper, 20.5% food, and 16.8% plastics. Recyclables represented 18.2% and yard waste represented 6.5% of MSW. Multivariate analysis determined that New York disposed MSW was similar to recent data from Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New York City, and Syracuse (NY), and different from 2021 California and 2018 EPA model data. Dual-stream recyclables were sorted slightly better than single-stream recyclables. These data are being used to help create a packaging extended producer responsibility law for New York.
