Cover Story: Despite the availability of biomarkers to help diagnose invasive aspergillosis, there is a pressing need for more tests for early detection of the infection. Recently, Aspergillus polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of blood and respiratory samples was included in the second revision of the EORTC/MSGERC definitions for defining invasive fungal disease. With new data from systematic reviews and meta-analyses, the FPCRI was able to undertake a so-called umbrella review that collects evidence from multiple existing systematic reviews and potentially provides the highest levels of evidence. If successful, this permits an overall methodological assessment of the included reviews to determine the degree of confidence in the quality of results generated by the individual systematic reviews.
