Cover Story: The efficient treatment and detoxification of landfill leachate are major environmental issues. In a collaboration with one of the biggest waste treatment plants in Europe (Municipal Waste Treatment Plant of Sofia city), a lab-scale model of the biological treatment in the plant was constructed. The results showed that biological treatment was effective at dilution of the leachate 50 and 25 times and can reduce energy consumption for further physicochemical treatment. In these cases, biotechnological management is an essential part of the whole hybrid technologies. View this paper
