Cover Story: Neurotransmitters (NTs) such as dopamine, serotonin, and epinephrine have specific roles in the normal functioning of central nervous systems. The monitoring of NT levels is of paramount importance in the management of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Recently, significant attention has been devoted to the fabrication of low-cost, sensitive, and reliable electrochemical sensors for NTs. In this paper, the recent developments in electrochemical sensors based on conducting polymers and metal nanoparticles for NT detection are discussed. The preparation strategies of sensing materials by means of classical methods and innovative methods are also reviewed in terms of improved overall analytical performance. Selected examples of dopamine, serotonin, and epinephrine detection in various samples are presented. View this paper
