About the Further Development of a Metatheoretical Analysis Grid for the Field of Education and (Non-)Sustainability
Abstract
1. Introduction
“One editor, who should, perhaps, remain nameless, once told me that he thought that the book review section was the only part of the journal where any academic discourse took place. The point he was making is that while papers always acknowledge the literature, few authors actually develop or challenge arguments made by other people. As a result, the process of publishing research is like making a papier-mâché model with articles being chewed rather than digested before being layered on top of each other”.

Appendix A
| 1 | In this article, ESD is used as an umbrella term that encompasses ESD in the narrow sense, but also educational concepts and terms that are related to the topic addressed in this article, for example: global learning, climate education, environmental education, citizenship education, and, more recently, planetary citizenship education and planetary thinking. |
| 2 | “Bildung has no obvious English-language substitute. It has been translated variously as education, edification, formation, learning, culture, cultivation and literacy. Bildung was given canonical definition by von Humboldt (1999) as ‘the linking of the self to the world to achieve the most general, most animated, and most unrestrained interplay’ (p. 58). In keeping with the breadth of this phrasing, Benner and Brüggen (2004) define Bildung as ‘the process of the forming [die Formung] of humans, as well as the determination [Bestimmung] of the goal and purpose of human existence’ (p. 175)—further underscoring the vast, ill-defined semantic space that this term occupies in the German language. In addition, Bildung signifies the ideal of the autonomous, self-determined and self-reflected personality in its full realisation. But Bildung goes beyond this as well. Bildung cannot be completely contained by terms such as ‘education’, ‘socialisation’, ‘instruction’ or ‘schooling’. Bildung identifies a kind of ‘becoming human’ that spans biographical, collective, institutional and historical dimensions. As such, it opens up the possibility of a generative process through which we are formed by the world, form ourselves and form the world (immediately) around us” (Kminek, 2024). In this article, I will use the term education as an umbrella term that also encompasses Bildung. |
| 3 | This article presents the MAG-ESD model, which could be of interest to the entire field of educational science. However, the focus of this article is on pedagogical approaches and educational theories that address the current polycrisis. For this reason, the more specific term ‘ESD’ is used instead of ‘education’. |
| 4 | The preceding elaborations on the four fundamental questions of ESD illuminate those dimensions of the key question concerned with how ESD is, and how it ought to be. Yet, they leave unaddressed a further, equally significant component: why the key question must also extend to what ESD might become, and what implications such a prospective orientation entails. This future-oriented dimension cannot be conclusively resolved. Indeed, although the ideal of scientific inquiry is often framed in terms of definitive answers, any attempt to fully determine what ESD might become would risk collapsing into arbitrariness or relativism by prematurely foreclosing the openness that characterises both educational practice and normative reflection. This component of the key question is distinctive in that it functions as a point of convergence for several underlying considerations. First, all empirical investigations related to the third and fourth fundamental questions are, whether explicitly acknowledged or not, guided by implicit conceptions of what ESD could or should become. These anticipatory assumptions shape the selection of research questions, methodologies, and interpretations of findings. If empirical research were to confine itself solely to describing and systematizing existing practices, it would risk adopting a positivist stance that ultimately undermines its own normative aspiration—namely, to contribute to the improvement and transformation of ESD practice. Secondly, within practical philosophy, it is a widely accepted principle that normative–prescriptive frameworks ought not to impose demands that are, in principle, unattainable (Henderson, 1966; Southwood, 2016). This constraint necessitates a continuous engagement with empirical realities, as captured in the third and fourth fundamental questions, in order to ensure that normative claims remain both meaningful and actionable. Taken together: ESD research can be understood as a dynamic and necessary interplay between descriptive–analytical inquiries (fundamental questions one and two) and empirical–practical investigations (questions three and four). Crucially, this interplay is never purely retrospective or present-oriented; rather, it is inherently prospective. The four fundamental questions are thus not isolated domains of inquiry, but mutually reinforcing dimensions of a broader epistemic and normative project. Together, they implicitly and continuously orient themselves toward addressing the open-ended question of what ESD might become. |
| 5 | This too is—once again—controversial in the philosophy of science. This concerns the discussion under the heading of ‘(in)commensurability’, (cf., e.g., Sankey, 1994). With this reflection, it seems to me that I have retroactively provided a justification for the broad understanding of ESD underlying this article. |
| 6 | As should have become clear in the previous section, the diversity of discourse is, in principle, a strength. However, this only applies if the various positions engage in dialogue with one another rather than remaining confined to their respective positions, or ‘paradigms’ in Kuhn’s terminology. |
| 7 | This means that an educational metatheory or the MAG-ESD developed below should not be based on a specific school of theory, as is the case, for example, with Bohnsack’s (2023) metatheoretical considerations of documentary school research or Brezinka’s (1978) metatheory of education, which argues from and for a specific position, namely that of the a version of analytical philosophy of the time. Within analytical philosophy, Brezinka took a position that was already hardly tenable, referring heavily to Popper’s (1994) position and not taking Van Orman Quine’s (1951) criticism into account. |

| 9 | Regarding the issue of the distinction between scientific theory, everyday theory and, for example, conspiracy theories, compare, for example, Boudry (2022). Ten issues are: 1. Threatened futures, 2. Worldview blindness, 3. Labels and boundaries, 4. Instrumentalism, 5. Transformation misconstrued, 6. Accommodation and compromise, 7. Ambivalence: whole system change—or ESD?, 8. Individualistic focus, 9. The development model and 10. Purpose and the great leap (Boudry, 2022). |
