Cover Story: We designed an educational experiment to evaluate the impact of the High Impact Leadership for School Renewal (HIL) project on principal leadership, school leadership, and student achievement. We found that principals in the experiment group reported significantly more improvement in principal leadership than principals in the control group, but there was no difference between teachers of the experiment and control groups in their ratings of principal leadership. Teachers in the experiment group reported significantly more improvement in school leadership than teachers in the control group, but principals in the two groups reported no difference in the growth in school leadership. Schools in the experiment group showed significantly larger annual growth in the English language arts proficiency rate than schools in the control group. View this paper
