Cover Story: Primordial germ cells (PGCs), the progenitors of gametes, migrate to genital ridges during early development. This event is dependent on a highly regulated chemotactic gradient. In this study, it is demonstrated that exposure of zebrafish embryos to high concentrations of bisphenol A (BPA)—the most common endocrine disruptor produced worldwide—interferes with the expression of two pivotal genes (cxcr4b and sdf1a), impairing the migration of PGCs. Despite the low number of PGCs that colonized genital ridges, testicles developed normally, and adult males displayed proper spermatogenesis and an unaltered breeding capacity. The great plasticity of zebrafish development might compensate for the effects of BPA on PGC migration, avoiding long-term consequences on male reproductive performance. View this paper
