Cover Story: The prevalent endocrine disruptor, bisphenol A (BPA), was found to affect interphase and mitotic microtubule arrays in the root cells of onion and wheat. Its detrimental effects were reversible, while experiments with anti-microtubule drugs indicated that microtubule disruption was the result of a direct interaction between BPA and free tubulin submits. However, the effects of BPA differed between the two plant species. In wheat, microtubules were extensively fragmented, while in onion, annular/spiral tubulin polymers were formed, and these effects were respectively correlated with high and low tubulin acetylation.
