Cover Story: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) capsids obtain their envelope by budding into cytoplasmic host cell membranes containing viral glycoproteins. This study identifies membranes of the endocytic compartment as the main source of the viral envelope by labeling glycoproteins at the cell surface using wheat germ agglutinin and provides first insights into the temporal dynamics of the envelopment process.
