Cover Story: Identification of mathematical models is a critical step to efficiently design control structures for autonomous vehicles. In this paper, a number of regression techniques—ridge, kernel ridge, and symbolic regression—are used for the black-box identification of a surface marine vehicle. The aim is to develop general and robust mathematical models using real experimental data from random manoeuvres and trajectories. Results show that machine learning techniques are robust approaches to model surface marine vehicles, even providing interpretable results in closed form equations using techniques like symbolic regression.
