Cover Story: Energy harvesting technologies are becoming increasingly popular as sources of energy for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Magnetic field energy harvesting (MFEH) from current-carrying components is a particularly promising technology for smart grid, infrastructure, and environmental monitoring applications. This paper presents a single-stage AC/DC power converter, a control architecture, and an energy harvester design that consists of a MOSFET full bridge used to actively rectify the induced voltage while providing a regulated output voltage. The compact design reduces the number of components required and improves thermal management, while the results demonstrate that the power converter provides a stable energy source and offers an alternative to self-powering smart grid IoT devices.
