Cover Story: The Belgium sandy coastline is very vulnerable to erosion; therefore, the development of sustainable and nature-based coastal protection solutions is a key feature. Enhancing the settlement of the ecosystem engineer Lanice conchilega (Pallas, 1766), which stabilizes the sediment bed, could be a solution. This study describes the development of innovative artificial substrate screening methodologies in laboratory conditions. This is with the goal of delivering technical recommendations for the development of an appropriate industrial artificial substrate with which to enhance the settlement of L.conchilega larvae on sandy coastlines. Through the use of an artificial substrate, L.conchilega aggregations could be restored and lead to sustainable as well as nature-based coastal protection. View this paper
