Cover Story: Heavy metals pose a serious threat to human health. Recent studies have linked damage associated with heavy metal exposure to oxidative stress and aging, and have identified common pathways, such as apoptosis, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and mitochondrial stress. Chelation therapy is a traditional approach to heavy metal-induced disorders, but recently the focus has shifted to antioxidants, which have been proven to be more effective treatments. This review discusses the molecular basis of heavy metal toxicity, its correlation with aging, and its clinical significance, as well as the role of antioxidants and other protective agents against heavy metal damage, reflecting the evolving paradigm in therapeutic approaches.
