Cover Story: This article reviews the mechanisms and potential therapeutic implications of aquaporins (AQPs) in critical illnesses. AQPs are known to facilitate water transport and maintain cellular homeostasis, yet their specific involvement in conditions like sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), acute kidney injury (AKI), and acute brain injury (ABI) is less understood. We searched the existing literature and highlighted how the dysregulation of AQPs contributes to fluid imbalances and organ dysfunction in critically ill patients. It seems that altered AQP expression correlates with disease severity and outcomes, suggesting that AQPs could serve as biomarkers and therapeutic targets. This review enhances our understanding of AQPs' multifaceted roles in critical care. View this paper
