Cover Story: Collaborative robots have the potential to improve the working conditions of human operators, especially in small- and medium-sized enterprises characterized by small and highly variable production batches. A suitable task design and an efficient interaction strategy between humans and robots are the milestones of a collaborative approach, which can be based on several technologies, possibly in a multimodal way. To improve a cooperative assembly task, we propose exploiting a brain–computer interface to supply commands to a robot, allowing the operator to switch between independent and cooperative modalities of assistance with desired timings. The usability and effectiveness of the proposed interaction strategy are evaluated to assess the advantages of the proposed solution. View this paper
