Cover Story: The weathering of platinum (Pt) grains under surface conditions suggest that a biogeochemical cycle of Pt exists; though the (bio) geochemical processes at the nugget-soil-solution interface are incompletely understood. Subsequent precipitation of colloidal Pt by bacteria complete the cycle, creating ‘exploration targets’ that could improve our ability to track its movement in natural systems, i.e., focusing on the recovery and analysis of nanoparticles as a strategy to search for new, undiscovered sources of this precious metal.
