Cover Story: We quantified the rates of volume reduction of sulfide mineral grains in low grade agglomerated copper bearing ores. Using X-ray tomography to allow non-disrupted column leaching experiments. We determine the heterogeneity in the leaching behaviour, as overall bulk reductions mask significant mm3 to cm3 scale variability in leaching, and so obscures the complex processes operating in real heap-leaching systems and limits our ability to improve leaching protocols.
