Cover Story: The future in Sub-Saharan Africa will be decisively shaped by urban growth and the dynamics of land-use change (LUC). Many metropolitan areas continue to witness massive increases in the rates and rapidity of LUC due to intensifying urban expansion processes. Consequently, the spatial growth potential of existing urban areas is fast-reaching its tipping point. To unravel the emerging frontiers of urban growth, an understanding of the spatiotemporal dynamics of LUC and urban expansion is both timely and necessary. Presenting the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area—Ghana’s capital city—as a case, this study examines how a major economic hub and political center is experiencing intensive increases in urban LUC, resulting in shifting geographies and hotspots of urban growth.
