Cover Story: Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem health; however, its depletion due to mining and recurrent wildfires accelerates soil degradation. Traditional SOC monitoring methods are often costly and time-consuming, limiting large-scale applications. Our study introduces an advanced approach that integrates unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and satellite imagery with machine learning techniques to enhance SOC mapping. Tested in a post-mining landscape and a wildfire-prone area, our method improves accuracy and scalability, enabling more effective land restoration strategies. These findings provide a cost-efficient, data-driven framework for long-term soil management and climate change mitigation efforts. View this paper
