Cover Story: The EU endeavours to promote synergies between rural and urban areas for inclusive growth. Effective governance of rural–urban linkages is crucial, but often lacks policy coherence. This study uses a Living Lab in Lucca (Italy) to explore how the integration of spatial planning and food policy can improve the sustainability of the food system in peri-urban areas. It highlights the challenges and opportunities in integrating urban and rural areas, focusing on the reclamation of peri-urban abandoned land. The study highlights the weak recognition of urban–rural linkages and recommends improving stakeholder dialogue, formalising public–private partnerships and linking agriculture with education, tourism and landscape projects.
