Cover Story: This 2015 image shows the role of a road and associated drainage ditch in accelerating ecosystem transition from healthy pond pine forest to ghost forest in response to sea level rise at the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in eastern North Carolina. Regionally, coastal ecosystem transition in response to sea-level rise is widespread, but our study shows that road networks and drainage systems accelerate the process due to enhanced inland propagation of flooding and salinity. Therefore, design of infrastructure in coastal forested landscapes must balance the need to protect human interests with the potential to alter hydrologic and salinity regimes in ways that compromise ecosystem function, currently manifested by the extensive formation of ghost forests along the US Atlantic and Gulf coastal plains, with significant implications for regional terrestrial C cycling and storage.
