Cover Story: Why purple scapolite always has a lower refractive index and specific gravity is an unsolved mystery. The scapolite consists of marialite and meionite, and the O in the marialite structure replaces the Cl in it to produce oxygen hole centers resulting in the purple color of the scapolite. Therefore, only scapolite with a high marialite content (83.15 % on average) shows a purple color, and the higher the marialite, the lower the specific gravity and refractive index of the scapolite. The absorption peak at 1045 cm−1 in the infrared spectra has a direct relationship with the Me value, which is blue-shifted with increasing Me value. This allows us to perform a simple classification of scapolite without chemical analysis. View this paper
