Cover Story: Viral encephalitides (VE) pose a major public health concern in West Africa and the world at large. VE is defined as an inflammation of the brain caused by a viral infection. Several viruses, particularly arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses), have been identified to cause encephalitic diseases in both humans and animals, leading to significant mortality rates and socioeconomic strains in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Three main factors are essential for the transmission, maintenance, and propagation of most of the encephalitis-causing viruses in West Africa, including the pathogen (virus), the vector (mosquito), and a suitable virus-replicating host. At present, very few effective preventive and control measures are available in Africa. Adopting the One Health approach among the relevant sectors could help address this global issue.
