Cover Story: In a decentralised renewable energy production scenario, a large number of small energy producers, the prosumers, contribute to a common distributor entity, who resells energy to the end users. A major challenge is to constantly balance produced vs consumed energy flows to ensure power stability with respect to the fluctuations in renewable energy sources. In this study, we explored the challenges and benefits of adopting an Ethereum blockchain network as a scalable remote interaction platform between the prosumers, and as a decentralised, trust-less platform with which to implement the energy load balancing service via smart contracts. The deployed aggregator service opportunely modulates the energy flows in order to provide quick restore actions in response to unpredictable unbalancing events. View this paper
