Cover Story: Thus far, little is known about Arctic algal viruses. Basic characterization of new dsDNA prasinovirus isolates, infectious to the common Arctic marine picoeukaryotic photoautotroph Micromonas, showed that only one of the four MpoVs was substantially different. However, highly virus-specific infectivity responses to temperature exposure were found. Additionally, testing these viruses on various algal host strains adapted to different growth temperatures indicates that temperature is an important factor, affecting virus production and diversity under natural conditions.
