Cover Story: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of surrogate reservoir models (SRMs) in optimizing CO2 storage in the Smeaheia saline aquifer. Using deep neural networks, the research accurately predicts CO2 saturation and pressure over 50 years with significantly reduced computational time—300 times faster than traditional simulations. A genetic algorithm was employed to maximize CO2 injection rates while ensuring safety through precise pressure control. The results confirm that approximately 170 Mt of CO2 can be stored securely in Smeaheia. This work paves the way for efficient, scalable CO2 storage solutions that contribute to emission reduction efforts. View this paper
