Cover Story: Cardiothoracic surgical critical care medicine (CT-CCM) is an inseparable component of any successful cardiothoracic surgical program. The demand for services provided by CT-CCM is projected to increase as the population grows older and sicker. With these trends in mind, it is important to evaluate the current state of CT-CCM. Here, we propose a set of principles that we find essential to the advancement of CT-CCM as a science and identify existing knowledge gaps in the field. View this paper
