Cover Story: A selective noble-metal-free molecular catalyst has emerged as a fruitful approach in the quest for designing efficient and stable catalytic materials for CO2 reduction. In this work, we report a sodium pectate complex of copper which has proved to be highly active in the electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CH4 in water. It is a nanoheterogeneous catalyst because it combines the advantages of a water-soluble molecular catalyst as well as a heterogeneous one due to its large molecular weight. The advantages of the catalyst are its stability, selectivity, and the ability to achieve good operating current densities of 10.5 mA/cm2. Another positive point is that ligands in this complex are derived from pectin, a cheap and readily available natural polysaccharide. View this paper.
