The Molecular Predictive and Prognostic Biomarkers in Breast Cancer

Dear Colleagues, 

Personalized oncology depends on the effects of germline and somatic differences on the way cancer patients respond to treatments. Routinely, through the genomic profiling of the tumors, the molecular signature would help clinicians in providing information relevant for personalization of the therapeutical program. Moreover, due to the molecular approaches, the interception of prognostic and/or predictive biomarkers would support the optimization of cancer diagnosis and the address of therapy decisions for any single patients, with a higher probability of responding or not to a specific treatment.

Several biomarkers are currently widely employed in breast cancers: from the routine pathology test of ER, PgR, Ki67 and HER2 to the new molecular tools as the status of BRCA 1 and 2, Pi3KCa, etc.

This review would provide an update of the known molecular or the potential new biomarkers in breast cancers that are or might be used in the evaluation of the benefits that can be achieved through targeted therapy or in the evaluation of toxic effects of treatments used in cancer patients.
