Basalt-fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) composites, utilizing a natural high-performance inorganic fiber, exhibit excellent weathering resistance, including tolerance to high and low temperatures, salt fog, and acid/alkali corrosion. They also possess superior mechanical properties such as high strength and modulus, making them widely applicable in aerospace and shipbuilding. This study experimentally investigated the mechanical properties of BFRP plates under various strain rates (10−4 s−1 to 103 s−1) and directions using an electronic universal testing machine and a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB).The results demonstrate significant strain rate dependency and pronounced anisotropy. Based on experimental data, relationships linking the strength of BFRP composites in different directions to strain rate were established. These relationships effectively predict mechanical properties within the tested strain rate range, providing reliable data for numerical simulations and valuable support for structural design and engineering applications. The developed strain rate relationships were successfully validated through finite element simulations of low-velocity impact. Full article

The stability of shield tunnel segmental linings is highly sensitive to the lateral pressure coefficient, especially under weak, heterogeneous, and variable geological conditions. However, the mechanical behavior of steel plate-reinforced linings under such conditions remains insufficiently characterized. This study aims to investigate the effects of varying lateral pressures on the structural performance of reinforced tunnel linings. To achieve this, a custom-designed full-circumference loading and unloading self-balancing apparatus was developed for scaled-model testing of shield tunnels. The experimental methodology allowed for precise control of loading paths, enabling the simulation of realistic ground stress states and the assessment of internal force distribution, joint response, and load transfer mechanisms during the elastic stage of the structure. Results reveal that increased lateral pressure enhances the stiffness and bearing capacity of the reinforced lining. The presence and orientation of segment joints, as well as the bonding performance between epoxy resin and expansion bolts at the reinforcement interface, significantly influence stress redistribution in steel plate-reinforced zones. These findings not only deepen the understanding of tunnel behavior in complex geological environments but also offer practical guidance for optimizing reinforcement design and improving the durability and safety of shield tunnels. This study comprehensively compares the performance of two non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques—active thermography (AT) and digital shearography (DS)—for identifying various damage types in composite structures. Three distinct composite specimens were inspected: a carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) plate with flat-bottom holes, an aluminum honeycomb core sandwich plate with a circular skin-core disbond, and a CFRP plate with two low-energy impacts damage. The research highlights the significant role of post-processing methods in enhancing damage detectability. For AT, algorithms such as fast Fourier transform (FFT) for temperature phase extraction and principal component thermography (PCT) for identifying significant temperature components were employed, generally making anomalies brighter and easier to locate and size. For DS, a novel band-pass filtering approach applied to phase maps, followed by summing the filtered maps, remarkably improved the visualization and precision of damage-induced anomalies by suppressing background noise. Qualitative image-based comparisons revealed that DS consistently demonstrated superior performance. The sum of DS filtered phase maps provided more detailed and precise information regarding damage location and size compared to both pulsed thermography (PT) and lock-in thermography (LT) temperature phase and amplitude. Notably, DS effectively identified shallow flat-bottom holes and subtle imperfections that AT struggled to clearly resolve, and it provided a more comprehensive representation of the impacts damage location and extent. This enhanced capability of DS is attributed to the novel phase map filtering approach, which significantly improves damage identification compared to the thermogram post-processing methods used for AT. In this article, thermal investigation methods for electrically insulating and thermally conductive substrate materials will be presented. The investigations were performed in their real-world application environment, i.e., in the form of IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) module substrate plates. First, the overall thermal resistance and thermal structure function of the system in a multivariable parameter space were revealed using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulations. Afterwards, thermal transient testing was performed on real samples, with the help of which the thermal resistance values of the modules were determined using the thermal dual interface test method. The presented tests are not intended to determine material parameters, but to rank different substrate materials based on their thermal performance. Full article

Reinforced concrete (RC) deep beams constructed with low-strength concrete are susceptible to sudden splitting failures in the strut region due to shear–compression stresses. To mitigate this vulnerability, various strengthening techniques, including steel plates, fiber-reinforced polymer sheets, and cementitious composites, have been explored to confine the strut area. This study investigates the structural performance of RC deep beams with low-strength concrete, strengthened externally using an Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) layer. To ensure effective confinement and uniform shear distribution, shear reinforcement was provided at equal intervals with configurations of zero, one, and two vertical shear reinforcements. Four-point bending tests revealed that the ECC layer significantly enhanced the shear capacity, increasing load-carrying capacity by 51.6%, 54.7%, and 46.7% for beams with zero, one, and two shear reinforcements, respectively. Failure analysis through non-linear finite element modeling corroborated experimental observations, confirming shear–compression failure characterized by damage in the concrete struts. The strut-and-tie method, modified to incorporate the tensile strength of ECC and shear reinforcement actual stress values taken from the FE analysis, was used to predict the shear capacity. The predicted values were within 10% of the experimental results, underscoring the reliability of the analytical approach. Overall, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of ECC in improving shear performance and mitigating strut failure in RC deep beams made with low-strength concrete. Full article

The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article

The superb dynamic performance of steel-plate composite (SC) structures under unexpected impact loading depends on the good design of the connection between the SC wall and foundation. This study investigated the flexural behavior and dynamic responses of SC wall-to-foundation connections subjected to low-velocity impact. Impact tests were performed on three SC connection specimens to evaluate failure mode, impact force, deflection, and strain responses. The effects of concrete strength grade and impact energy were analyzed in detail. All specimens exhibited flexural failure, with three distinct stages observed during impact. The experimental results demonstrated that compared to the specimen with C30 concrete, the specimen with C50 concrete significantly reduced wall damage, decreased deflections, and enhanced deflection recovery ability. It can be concluded that increasing the concrete strength grade effectively improves the impact resistance of SC wall-to-foundation connections. In addition, peak impact force, global deflection response, residual strains, and interface crack length were highly sensitive to changes in impact energy, whereas deflection recovery exhibited lower sensitivity. Furthermore, a finite element model was developed and validated against experimental results. Parametric studies explored the influence of key parameters with expanded ranges on the impact responses of SC wall-to-foundation connections. Full article

Transmission towers are particularly vulnerable to extreme wind events, which can lead to structural damage or collapse, thereby compromising the stability of power transmission systems. Enhancing the wind-resistant capacity of these towers is therefore critical for improving the reliability and resilience of electrical infrastructure. This study utilizes finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate the structural response of a 220 kV transmission tower subjected to fluctuating wind loads, effectively capturing the dynamic characteristics of wind-induced forces. A comprehensive dynamic analysis is conducted to account for uncertainties in wind loading and variations in wind direction. Through this approach, this study identifies the most critical wind angle and local structural weaknesses, as well as determines the threshold wind speed that precipitates structural collapse. To improve structural resilience, a concurrent multi-scale modeling strategy is adopted. This allows for localized analysis of vulnerable components while maintaining a holistic understanding of the tower’s global behavior. To mitigate failure risks, the traditional perforated plate reinforcement technique is implemented. The reinforcement’s effectiveness is evaluated based on its impact on load-bearing capacity, displacement control, and stress redistribution. Results reveal that the critical wind direction is 45°, with failure predominantly initiating from instability in the third section of the tower leg. Post-reinforcement analysis demonstrates a marked improvement in structural performance, evidenced by a significant reduction in top displacement and stress intensity in the critical leg section. Overall, these findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the wind-induced fragility of transmission towers and offer practical reinforcement strategies that can be applied to enhance their structural integrity under extreme wind conditions. This paper reviews the fundamental principles and techniques of nickel electrodeposition, with a particular focus on metallizing polymeric substrates. It outlines the electrochemical mechanisms involved in depositing nickel from an acidic Watts bath, detailing the roles of key electrolyte components—i.e., nickel sulfate, nickel chloride, and boric acid—and the influence of process parameters, such as current density, temperature, and pH, on deposit quality (density and surface condition) and mechanical properties. In addressing the unique challenges posed by non-conductive polymers, this review compares emerging methods like silver conductive paint, highlighting differences in deposition time, surface resistivity, and environmental impact. Additionally, this paper examines how process parameters affect the as-deposited microstructure, adhesion, and overall mechanical properties (such as hardness, ductility, and tensile strength), while identifying critical issues such as low deposition density and substrate degradation. These insights provide a structured background for optimizing electroplating processes for applications in electronics, automotive, aerospace, and biomedical sectors, and suggest future research directions to enhance deposition uniformity, sustainability, and process control. The current study examines the influence of a varying gravity field and its interaction with density stratification. This represents a novel area in baroclinic flow analysis. The classical vortex and internal wave structures in stratified flows are shown to be significantly modified when gravity varies with height. Vortices may shift, stretch, or weaken depending on the direction and strength of gravity variation, and internal waves develop asymmetries or damping that are not present under constant gravity. We examine the influence of gravity variation on the flow of both homogeneous and density-stratified fluids in a channel with topography consisting of a Gaussian obstacle lying at the bottom of the channel. The flow is without inertia, induced by the translation of the top plate. Both the density and gravity are assumed to vary linearly with height, with the minimum density at the moving top plate. The narrow-gap approach is used to generate the flow field in terms of the pressure gradient along the top plate, which, in turn, is obtained in terms of the bottom topography and the three parameters of the problem, namely, the Froude number and the density and gravity gradients. The resulting stream function is a fifth-order polynomial in the vertical coordinate. In the absence of stratification, the flow is smooth, affected rather slightly by the variable topography, with an essentially linear drop in the pressure induced by the contraction. For a weak stratified fluid, the streamlines become distorted in the form of standing gravity waves. For a stronger stratification, separation occurs, and a pair of vortices generally appears on the two sides of the obstacle, the size of which depends strongly on the flow parameters. The influence of gravity stratification is closely coupled to that of density. We examine conditions where the coupling impacts the pressure and the velocity fields, particularly the onset of gravity waves and vortex flow. Only a mild density gradient is needed for flow separation to occur. The influence of the amplitude and width of the obstacle is also investigated. Full article

In our study, supercapacitor electrodes were prepared by depositing electroless Ni-B coating on copper plates, followed by nitric acid etching. The composition and the micro- and phase structure of the coatings were investigated by ICP-OES, PFIB-SEM, and XRD techniques. The original pebble-like structure of the coating consists of 0.8–10 µm particles, with an X-ray amorphous phase structure. The surface morphology and porosity of the coating can be tuned simply by changing the etching time. The supercapacitive performance of the electrodes was evaluated by means of cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge–discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. The capacitance of the coating was found to vary on the etching time according to a maximum function, allowing for the determination of an optimal duration to obtain a specific capacitance of 157 mF/cm2 (at 0.5 A/g). An excellent charge storage retention of 178% was found after 5000 CV cycles at a scan rate of 50 mV/s owing to the evolved electrochemically active network on the surface of the electrode, indicating a long-term stable and reliable electrode. A scalable synthesis of two-dimensional titanium nitride chloride (TiNCl) via flash Joule heating (FJH) using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) precursor has been developed. This single-step method overcomes traditional synthesis challenges, including high energy consumption, multi-step procedures, and hazardous reagent requirements. The structural and chemical properties of the synthesized TiNCl were characterized through multiple analytical techniques. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirmed the presence of TiNCl phase, while Raman spectroscopy data showed no detectable oxide impurities. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis revealed characteristic Ti–N stretching vibrations, further confirming successful titanium nitride synthesis. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging revealed thin, plate-like nanostructures with high electron transparency. These analyses confirmed the formation of highly crystalline TiNCl flakes with nanoscale dimensions and minimal structural defects. The material exhibits excellent structural integrity and phase purity, demonstrating potential for applications in photocatalysis, electronics, and energy storage. This work establishes FJH as a sustainable and scalable approach for producing MXenes with controlled properties, facilitating their integration into emerging technologies. Unlike conventional methods, FJH enables rapid, energy-efficient synthesis while maintaining material quality, providing a viable route for industrial-scale production of two-dimensional materials. The performance of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures will gradually decrease over time, posing a threat to the safety of buildings. Although the performance of some buildings may still meet the safety requirements, they cannot meet new usage requirements. Therefore, this paper proposes a new-type joint to promote the development of research on the reinforcement and renovation of RC frame structures in response to this situation. The RC beams and columns of the joints are connected by embedded horizontal steel plate (a single plate with dimension of 150 mm × 200 mm × 5 mm), and the beams and columns are individually wrapped in steel. Through conducting low cyclic loading tests, this paper analyzes the influence of carrying out wrapped steel treatment and the thickness of wrapped steel of the beam and connector on mechanical performance indicators such as hysteresis curve, skeleton curve, stiffness, ductility, and energy dissipation. The experimental results indicate that the reinforcement using steel plate can significantly improve the dynamic performance of the joint. The effect of changing the thickness of the connector on the dynamic performance of the specimen is not significant, while increasing the thickness of wrapped steel of beam can effectively improve the overall strength of joint. The research results of this paper will help promote the application of reinforcement and renovation technology for existing buildings, and improve the quality of human living. Full article

This paper studies the effect of reversible hydrogen alloying of the TC4 alloy on the microstructure, phase composition, and mechanical properties before and after equal-channel angular pressing. It is shown that the introduction of 0.3% hydrogen followed by quenching from a temperature of 850 °C leads to the formation of a thin-plate α″-martensite, which made it possible to implement 6 passes (ε ~ 4.2) of pressing at 600 °C. As a result of the deformation of the TC4-H alloy and subsequent thermal vacuum treatment to remove hydrogen, an ultrafine-grained structure with an average size of the α-phase of 0.15 μm was formed, which led to strengthening of the alloy to 1490 MPa with a relative elongation of about 5% at room temperature. The reasons for a more significant refinement of the grain/subgrain structure and an increase in the tensile strength of the hydrogenated alloy after equal-channel angular pressing in comparison with hydrogen-free TC4 alloy are discussed. Shoulder-assisted heating friction plug welding (SAH-FPW) experiments were conducted to repair keyhole-like volumetric defects in 6082-T6 aluminum alloy, employing a novel concave backing hole technique on a flat backing plate. This approach yielded well-formed plug welded joints without significant macroscopic defects. Notably, the joints exhibited no thinning on the top surface while forming a reinforcing boss structure within the concave backing hole on the backside, resulting in a slight increase in the overall load-bearing thickness. The introduction of the concave backing hole led to distinct microstructural zones compared to joints welded without it. The resulting joint microstructure comprised five regions: the nugget zone, a recrystallized zone, a shoulder-affected zone, the thermo-mechanically affected zone, and the heat-affected zone. Significantly, this process eliminated the poorly consolidated ‘filling zone’ often associated with conventional plug repairs. The microhardness across the joints was generally slightly higher than that of the base metal (BM), with the concave backing hole technique having minimal influence on overall hardness values or their distribution. However, under identical welding parameters, joints produced using the concave backing hole consistently demonstrated higher tensile strength than those without. The joints displayed pronounced ductile fracture characteristics. A maximum ultimate tensile strength of 278.10 MPa, equivalent to 89.71% of the BM strength, was achieved with an elongation at fracture of 9.02%. Analysis of the grain structure revealed that adjacent grain misorientation angle distributions deviated from a random distribution, indicating dynamic recrystallization. The nugget zone (NZ) possessed a higher fraction of high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) compared to the RZ and TMAZ. These findings indicate that during the SAH-FPW process, the use of a concave backing hole ultimately enhances structural integrity and mechanical performance. Full article
