Isolation and Characterization of Lignin from Sapele (Entandrophragma cylindricum): Application in Flexible Polyurethane Foam Production

Lignin used in this work was isolated from sapele (Entandrophragma cylindricum) wood through a hybrid pulping process using soda/ethanol as pulping liquor and denoted soda-oxyethylated lignin (SOL). SOL was mixed with a polyethylene glycol (PEG)–glycerol mixture (80/20 v/v) as liquefying solvent with 98% wt. sulfur acid as catalyst, and the mixture was taken to boil at 140 °C for 2, 2.5, and 3 h. Three bio-polyols LBP1, LBP2, and LBP3 were obtained, and each of them exhibited a high proportion of -OH groups. Lignin-based polyurethane foams (LBPUFs) were prepared using the bio-polyols obtained with a toluene diisocyanate (TDI) prepolymer by the one-shot method. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C NMR) were used characterize lignin in order to determine viscosity, yield, and composition and to characterize their structure. The PEG-400–glycerol mixture was found to react with the lignin bio-polyols’ phenolic -OHs. The bio-polyols’ viscosity was found to increase as the liquefaction temperature increased, while simultaneously their molecular weights decreased. All the NCO groups were eliminated from the samples, which had high thermal stability as the liquefaction temperature increased, leading to a decrease in cell size, density, and crystallinity and an improvement in mechanical performance. Based on these properties, especially the presence of some aromatic rings in the bio-polyols, the foams produced can be useful in automotive applications and for floor carpets. Full article

The widespread adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel has driven the development of LNG bunkering operations in global ports. Major international hubs, such as Shenzhen Port, have implemented ship-to-ship (STS) bunkering practices. However, this process entails unique safety risks, particularly hazards associated with vapor cloud dispersion caused by bunkering hose releases. This study employs the Phast software developed by DNV to systematically simulate LNG release scenarios during STS operations, integrating real-world meteorological data and storage conditions. The dynamic effects of transfer flow rates, release heights, and release directions on vapor cloud dispersion are quantitatively analyzed under daytime and nighttime conditions. The results demonstrate that transfer flow rate significantly regulates dispersion range, with recommendations to limit the rate below 1500 m3/h and prioritize daytime operations to mitigate risks. Release heights exceeding 10 m significantly amplify dispersion effects, particularly at night (nighttime dispersion area at a height of 20 m is 3.5 times larger than during the daytime). Optimizing release direction effectively suppresses dispersion, with vertically downward releases exhibiting minimal impact. Horizontal releases require avoidance of downwind alignment, and daytime operations are prioritized to reduce lateral dispersion risks. Full article

With the rise of carbon capture and storage, liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) has emerged as a promising medium for large-scale marine transport. This study evaluates the structural integrity of an IMO Type C cargo tank for a medium-range LCO2 carrier under four conditions: ultimate limit state, accidental limit state, hydrostatic pressure test, and fatigue limit state, based on IGC Code and classification rules. Seventeen load cases were analyzed using finite element methods with multi-step loading to ensure stability. The highest stress occurred at the pump dome–shell junction due to geometric discontinuities, but all stress and buckling criteria were satisfied. The fatigue damage from wave-induced loads was negligible, with low-cycle fatigue from loading/unloading operations governing the fatigue life, which exceeded 31,000 years. The findings confirm the tank’s structural robustness and its suitability for safe, efficient medium-pressure LCO2 transport. Full article

Given that cryogenic pumps on liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers are prone to cavitation under complex operating conditions, this paper examines the inducer of an LNG centrifugal pump to uncover how the inducer geometry affects both the cavitation behavior and internal flow-induced excitation at −163 °C. Through detailed numerical simulations, we evaluate the cavitation performance and flow excitation characteristics across a range of inducer designs, systematically varying the blade count, inlet and outlet angles, and blade wrap angle. Our results show that reducing the number of blades, together with properly optimized inlet/outlet and wrap angles, significantly enhances the cavitation resistance. These findings provide a solid theoretical basis and practical guidance for the engineering optimization of LNG ship pumps. Full article

Many low-temperature applications, such as rocket engines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport pumps, necessitate ultra-low-temperature operational environments. In these conditions, the properties of lubricating oils and greases are significantly influenced by temperature, leading to the widespread adoption of solid lubrication. Currently, there is no international research regarding the influence of bearing coatings on the subsurface stress distribution in raceways. The Lundberg–Palmgren (L-P) theory states that subsurface stress variations govern bearing lifespan. Therefore, this paper utilizes existing formulas and Python programming to calculate the subsurface stress field of the inner raceway in a MoS2 solid-lubricated angular contact ball bearing. Furthermore, it analyzes the impacts of factors such as coating material properties, slide-to-roll ratio, traction coefficient, and load on its subsurface stress field. The results reveal that for solid-lubricated ball bearings, as the load increases, the maximum subsurface stress shifts closer to the center of the contact area, and the maximum subsurface shear stress becomes more concentrated. As the traction coefficient increases, the stress on the XZ-plane side increases and its position moves closer to the surface, while the opposite trend is observed on the other side. Additionally, the maximum value of the subsurface von Mises stress is approximately 0.64P0, and the maximum value of the orthogonal shear stress component τyz in the subsurface is approximately 0.25P0. This study treated the NaOH component in red mud sludge, an industrial by-product generated at 300,000 tons annually in Korea, with sulfuric and nitric acids to produce NaSO4 and NaNO3, respectively. The effects of acid-treated liquid red mud (LRM) on the hydration reactions and early strength development in cement mortar were investigated. Properties such as flow, setting time, hydration heat, and compressive strength were evaluated alongside hydration product analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The neutralization of LRM stabilized the pH between 7 and 8. Mortars containing neutralized red mud (NRM) and sulfuric-treated red mud (SRM) exhibited shorter initial setting times and similar final setting times compared to untreated red mud (LM). After one day, XRD confirmed the presence of Ca(OH)2 in NRM and SRM but not in LM, while SEM revealed reduced pore sizes in NRM and SRM. Depending on dosage, the compressive strength of SRM increased by 35–60% compared to Plain mortar. These results demonstrate that LRM treated with nitric or sulfuric acid has significant potential as a setting accelerator for cement mortar. Full article

Sustainability Assessment of Rural Biogas Production and Use Through a Multi-Criteria Approach: A Case Study in Colombia

There is still a need to develop scenarios and models aimed at substituting fuelwood and reducing the use of fossil fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), on which low-income rural households in the Global South often depend. The use of these fuels for cooking and heating in domestic and productive activities poses significant health and environmental risks. This study validated, in three different phases, the sustainability of a model for the production and use of biogas from the treatment of swine-rearing wastewater (WWs) on a community farm: (i) A Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA), incorporating environmental, social/health, technical, and economic criteria, identified the main weighted criterion to C8 (use of small-scale technologies and low-cost access), with a score of 0.44 points, as well as the Tubular biodigester (Tb) as the most suitable option for the study area, scoring 8.1 points. (ii) Monitoring of the Tb over 90 days showed an average biogas production of 2.6 m3 d−1, with average correlation 0.21 m3 Biogas kg Biomass−1. Using the experimental biogas production rate (k = 0.0512 d−1), the process was simulated with the BgMod model, achieving an average deviation of only 10.4% during the final production phase. (iii) The quantification of benefits demonstrated significant reductions in firewood use: in Scenario S1 (kitchen energy needs), biogas replaced 83.1% of firewood, while in Scenario S2 (citronella essential oil production), the substitution rate was 24.1%. In both cases, the avoided emissions amounted to 0.52 tons of CO2eq per month. Finally, this study proposes a synthesised, community-based rural biogas framework designed for replication in regions with similar socio-environmental, technical, and economic conditions. Natural vaporization in LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) tanks refers to the process where liquid LPG is converted to vapor naturally due to ambient heat. This natural vaporization process relies on ambient heat from the surroundings, which is transferred through the walls of the LPG tank. The natural vaporization rate depends on several factors, such as the ambient temperature, the surface area of the tank in contact with the liquid (i.e., the filling fraction), the exact composition of LPG, and the design and positioning of the LPG tank. When natural vaporization rates cannot meet the gas demand, as in the case of colder climates and large commercial applications, an additional LPG vaporizer will be necessary. The obtained results revealed that pure propane at an operating pressure of 1.75 bar achieves specific vaporization rates per unit of tank surface area of 0.7 kg/h/m2, which decreases to 0.4 and 0.25 kg/h/m2 for LPG mixtures with 20% and 40% butane, respectively. For a lower operating pressure of 1.10 bar, the specific vaporization rate per unit of tank surface area is 1.0 kg/h/m2 for pure propane, 0.85 kg/h/m2 for 20% butane, and 0.70 kg/h/m2 for 40% butane. This article presents the development, integration, and experimental validation of a modular microgrid for sustainable hydrogen production, addressing global electricity demand and environmental challenges. The system was designed for initial validation in a thermoelectric power plant environment, with scalability to other applications. Centered on a six-compartment skid, it integrates photovoltaic generation, battery storage, and a liquefied petroleum gas generator to emulate typical cogeneration conditions, together with a high-purity proton exchange membrane electrolyzer. A supervisory control module ensures real-time monitoring and energy flow management, following international safety standards. The study also explores the incorporation of blockchain technology to certify the renewable origin of hydrogen, enhancing traceability and transparency in the green hydrogen market. The experimental results confirm the system’s technical feasibility, demonstrating stable hydrogen production, efficient energy management, and islanded-mode operation with preserved grid stability. These findings highlight the strategic role of hydrogen as an energy vector in the transition to a cleaner energy matrix and support the proposed architecture as a replicable model for industrial facilities seeking to combine hydrogen production with advanced microgrid technologies. Future work will address large-scale validation and performance optimization, including advanced energy management algorithms to ensure economic viability and sustainability in diverse industrial contexts. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is increasingly used as a marine fuel due to its capacity to significantly reduce emissions of particulate matter, sulfur oxides (SOx), and nitrogen oxides (NOx), compared to conventional fuels. In addition, LNG combustion produces less carbon dioxide (CO2) than conventional marine fuels, and the use of non-fossil LNG offers further potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, this benefit can be partially offset by methane slip—the release of unburned methane in engine exhaust—which has a much higher global warming potential than CO2. This study presents an experimental evaluation of methane emissions from a RoPax vessel powered by low-pressure dual-fuel four-stroke engines with a direct mechanical propulsion system. Methane slip was measured directly during onboard testing and combined with a year-long analysis of engine operation using an Engine Load Monitoring (ELM) method. The yearly average methane slip coefficient (Cslip) obtained was 1.57%, slightly lower than values reported in previous studies on cruise ships (1.7%), and significantly lower than the default values specified by the FuelEU (3.1%) Maritime regulation and IMO (3.5%) LCA guidelines. This result reflects the ship’s operational profile, characterized by long crossings at high and stable engine loads. This study provides results that could support more representative emission assessments and can contribute to ongoing regulatory discussions. Full article

The increasing levels of ozone pollution have become a significant environmental issue in urban areas worldwide. Previous studies have confirmed that the urban ozone pollution in China is mainly controlled by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) rather than nitrogen oxides. Therefore, a study on the emission characteristics and source analysis of VOCs is important for controlling urban ozone pollution. In this study, hourly concentrations of 57 VOC species in four groups were obtained in April 2022, a period of high ozone pollution in Kunming, China. The ozone formation potential analysis showed that the accumulated reactive VOCs significantly contributed to the subsequent ozone formation, particularly aromatics (44.16%) and alkanes (32.46%). In addition, the ozone production rate in Kunming is mainly controlled by VOCs based on the results of the empirical kinetic modeling approach (KNOx/KVOCs = 0.25). The hybrid single-particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory model and polar coordinate diagram showed high VOC and ozone concentrations from the southwest outside the province (50.28%) and the south in local areas (12.78%). Six factors were obtained from the positive matrix factorization model: vehicle exhaust (31.80%), liquefied petroleum gas usage (24.16%), the petrochemical industry (17.81%), fuel evaporation (11.79%), coal burning (7.47%), and solvent usage (6.97%). These findings underscore that reducing anthropogenic VOC emissions and strengthening controls on the related sources could provide a scientifically robust strategy for mitigating ozone pollution in Kunming. This review explores recent advancements in inhaled nanoparticle formulations and inhalation devices, with a focus on various types of nanoparticles used for inhalation to treat inflammatory lung diseases and the types of devices used in their delivery. Medical nebulizers have been found to be the most appropriate type of inhalation devices for the pulmonary delivery of nanoparticles, since formulations can be prepared using straightforward techniques, with no need for liquefied propellants as in the case of pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDIs), or complicated preparation procedures as in the case of dry powder inhalers (DPIs). We demonstrated examples of how formulations should be designed considering the operation mechanism of nebulizers, and how an interplay of factors can affect the aerosol characteristics of nanoparticle formulations. Overall, nanoparticle-based formulations offer promising potential for the treatment of inflammatory lung diseases due to their unique physicochemical properties and ability to provide localized drug delivery in the lung following inhalation. The maritime industry remains a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In this article, a systematic study has been performed on the alternative fuel emissions of large cargo ships under different route scenarios and propulsion systems. For this purpose, a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) are evaluated, including total equivalent CO2 emissions (CO2eq), CO2eq emissions per unit of transport mass and CO2eq emissions per unit of transport mass per distance. The emissions analysis demonstrates that Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) paired with Marine Gas Oil (MGO) emerges as the most viable short-term solution in comparison with the conventional fuel oil propulsion. Synthetic methanol (eMeOH) paired with synthetic diesel (eDiesel) is identified as the most promising long-term fuel combination. When comparing the European Union (EU) emission calculation system (FuelEU) with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) emission metrics, a discrepancy in emissions reduction outcomes has been observed. The IMO approach appears to favor methanol (MeOH) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) over conventional fuel oil. This is attributed to the fact that the IMO metrics do not consider unburned methane emissions (methane slip) and emissions in the production of fuels (Well-to-Tank). Full article

Effect of Alternating Magnetic Field Intensity on Microstructure and Corrosion Properties of Deposited Metal in 304 Stainless Steel TIG Welding

Stainless steel, due to its exceptional comprehensive properties, has been widely adopted as the primary material for liquid cargo tank containment systems and pipelines in liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. However, challenges such as hot cracking, excessive deformation, and the deterioration of welded joint performance during stainless steel welding significantly constrain the construction quality and safety of LNG carriers. While conventional tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding can produce high-integrity welds, it is inherently limited by shallow penetration depth and low efficiency. Magnetic field-assisted TIG welding technology addresses these limitations by introducing an external magnetic field, which effectively modifies arc morphology, refines grain structure, enhances penetration depth, and improves corrosion resistance. In this study, TIG bead-on-plate welding was performed on 304 stainless steel plates, with a systematic investigation into the dynamic arc behavior during welding, as well as the microstructure and anti-corrosion properties of the deposited metal. The experimental results demonstrate that, in the absence of a magnetic field, the welding arc remains stable without deflection. As the intensity of the alternating magnetic field intensity increases, the arc exhibits pronounced periodic oscillations. At an applied magnetic field intensity of 30 mT, the maximum arc deflection angle reaches 76°. With increasing alternating magnetic field intensity, the weld penetration depth gradually decreases, while the weld width progressively expands. Specifically, at 30 mT, the penetration depth reaches a minimum value of 1.8 mm, representing a 44% reduction compared to the non-magnetic condition, whereas the weld width peaks at 9.3 mm, corresponding to a 9.4% increase. Furthermore, the ferrite grains in the weld metal are significantly refined at higher alternating magnetic field intensities. The weld metal subjected to a 30 mT alternating magnetic field exhibits the highest breakdown potential, the lowest corrosion rate, and the most protective passive film, indicating superior corrosion resistance compared to other tested conditions. Heavy industry is a significant contributor to CO2 global emissions, accounting for approximately 25% of the total. In Europe, the continent’s largest emitting industries, including steel, cement, and power generation, face significant decarbonization challenges due to multiple interrelated factors. Heavy industry must achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, as outlined in the 13th United Nations Sustainable Goals. One strategy to achieve this goal involves Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) with post-combustion carbon capture (PCC) technologies playing a critical role. Key methods include absorption, which uses chemical solvents like amines; adsorption, employing solid sorbents; cyclic CO2 capture, such as calcium looping methods; cryogenic separation, which involves chilling flue gas to liquefy CO2; and membrane separation, leveraging polymeric materials. Each technology offers unique advantages and challenges, necessitating hybrid approaches and policy support for widespread adoption. In this sense, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the existing European pilot and demonstration units and projects, funded by the EU across several industries. It specifically focuses on PCC. This study examines 111 industrial facilities across Europe, documenting the PCC technologies deployed at plants of varying capacities, geographic locations, and operational stakeholders. The review further evaluates the techno-economic performance of these systems, assessing their potential to advance carbon neutrality in heavy industries. Full article
