To accurately assess the effect of different plate thicknesses on the residual stress field of laser shock peened GH3039 superalloy, residual stress measurements were performed on GH3039 alloy plates with thicknesses of 2 mm and 5 mm after laser shock peening (LSP) treatment. Both quasi-static and high strain rate mechanical tests of GH3039 were conducted, and the Johnson-Cook (J-C) constitutive equation for GH3039 alloy at specific strain rates was fitted based on the experimental results. To obtain the parameter C in the J-C constitutive equation of GH3039 alloy under ultra-high strain rates, a modified method was proposed based on LSP experiment and finite element simulation results. Using the modified GH3039 alloy J-C constitutive equation, numerical simulations and comparative analyses of the residual stress field of GH3039 alloy plates of different thicknesses under LSP were carried out using ABAQUS software. The simulated residual stress fields of laser-shocked GH3039 alloy plates of different thicknesses were in good agreement with the experimental measurements, indicating that the modified GH3039 alloy J-C constitutive equation can accurately predict the mechanical behavior of GH3039 alloy under ultra-high strain rates. Based on the modified GH3039 alloy J-C constitutive equation, the effect of different plate thicknesses on the residual stress distribution of laser-shocked GH3039 alloy was studied, along with the underlying mechanisms. The unique distribution characteristics of residual stresses in laser-shocked GH3039 plates with varying thicknesses are primarily attributed to differences in plate bending stiffness and the detrimental coupling effects of reflected tensile waves. Conventional asphalt is prone to cracking in cold climates due to its poor flexibility and limited ability to regulate temperature. This study investigates the use of low-temperature microencapsulated phase-change materials (MPCMs) to improve both the thermal storage and low-temperature performance of asphalt. MPCMs were incorporated into asphalt through physical blending at various concentrations. The physical, thermal, and rheological properties of the asphalt were then systematically evaluated. Tests included penetration, softening point, ductility, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). The addition of MPCMs increased penetration and ductility. It slightly reduced the softening point and viscosity. These changes suggest improved flexibility and workability at low temperatures. Rheological tests showed reductions in rutting and fatigue factors. This indicates better resistance to thermal and mechanical stresses. Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) results further confirmed that MPCMs lowered creep stiffness and increased the m-value. These findings demonstrate improved crack resistance under cold conditions. Thermal cycling tests also showed that MPCMs delayed the cooling process and reduced temperature fluctuations. This highlights their potential to enhance both energy efficiency and the durability of asphalt pavements in cold regions. Full article

This paper presents research in the field of computer-aided 3D clothing design, focusing on an investigation of three methods for determining the mechanical properties of woven fabrics and their impact on 3D clothing simulations in the context of sustainable apparel development. Five mechanical parameters were analyzed: tensile elongation in the warp and weft directions, shear stiffness, bending stiffness, specific weight, and fabric thickness. These parameters were integrated into the CLO3D CAD software v.2025.0.408, using data obtained via the KES-FB system, the Fabric Kit protocol, and the AI-based tool, SEDDI Textura 2024. Simulations of women’s blouse and trousers were evaluated using dynamic tests and validated by real prototypes measured with the ARAMIS optical 3D system. Results show average differences between digital and real prototype deformation data up to 6% with an 8% standard deviation, confirming the high accuracy of 3D simulations based on the determined mechanical parameters of the real fabric sample. Notably, the AI-based method demonstrated excellent simulation results compared with real garments, highlighting its potential for accessible, sustainable, and scalable fabric digitization. Presented research is entirely in line with the current trends of digitization and sustainability in the textile industry. It contributes to the advancement of efficient digital prototyping workflows and emphasizes the importance of reliable mechanical characterization for predictive garment modeling. Full article

As a novel prefabricated structural element, the pre-tensioned, prestressed concrete T-beam with polygonal tendons layout demonstrates advantages including reduced prestress loss, streamlined construction procedures, and stable manufacturing quality, showing promising applications in medium-span bridge engineering. This paper conducted a full-scale experiment and numerical simulation research on a 30 m pre-tensioned, prestressed concrete T-beam with polygonal tendons practically used in engineering. The full-scale experiment applied symmetrical four-point bending to create a pure bending region and used embedded strain gauges, surface sensors, and optical 3D motion capture systems to monitor the beam’s internal strain, surface strain distribution, and three-dimensional displacement patterns during loading. The experiment observed that the test beam underwent elastic, crack development, and failure phases. The design’s service-load bending moment induced a deflection of 18.67 mm (below the 47.13 mm limit). Visible cracking initiated under a bending moment of 7916.85 kN·m, which exceeded the theoretical cracking moment of 5928.81 kN·m calculated from the design parameters. Upon yielding of the bottom steel reinforcement, the maximum of the crack width reached 1.00 mm, the deflection in mid-span measured 148.61 mm, and the residual deflection after unloading was 10.68 mm. These results confirmed that the beam satisfied design code requirements for serviceability stiffness and crack control, exhibiting favorable elastic recovery characteristics. Numerical simulations using ABAQUS further verified the structural performance of the T-beam. The finite element model accurately captured the beam’s mechanical response and verified its satisfactory ductility, highlighting the applicability of this beam type in bridge engineering. In order to verify the rationality and feasibility of a demountable and replaceable fabricated RC beam with bolted connection under mid-span compression, one cast-in-place RC beam and four fabricated RC beams were designed and fabricated. Through the mid-span static loading test and analysis of five full-scale RC beams, the effects of high-strength bolt specifications and stiffeners were compared, and the behavior of the fabricated RC beams with bolted connections was analyzed. The test process was observed and the test results were analyzed. The failure mode, cracking load, yield load, ultimate load, stiffness change, deflection measured value, ductility, and other indicators of the specimens were compared and analyzed. It was shown that the failure mode of the fabricated RC beam was reinforcement failure, which met the three stress stages of the normal section bending of the reinforcement beam. The failure position occurred at 10~15 cm of the concrete outside the bolt connection, and the beam support and the core area of the bolt connection were not damaged. The fabricated RC beam has good mechanical performance and high bearing capacity. In addition, comparing the test value with the simulation value, it is found that they are in good agreement, indicating that ABAQUS software of 2024 can be well used for the simulation analysis of the behavior of fabricated RC beam structure. Effects of Ginger Supplementation on Markers of Inflammation and Functional Capacity in Individuals with Mild to Moderate Joint Pain

Background: Ginger contains gingerols, shagaols, paradols, gingerdiones, and terpenes, which have been shown to display anti-inflammatory properties and inhibit pain receptors. For this reason, ginger has been marketed as a natural analgesic. This study examined whether a specialized ginger extract obtained through supercritical CO2 extraction and subsequent fermentation affects pain perception, functional capacity, and markers of inflammation. Methods: Thirty men and women (56.0 ± 9.0 years, 164.4 ± 14 cm, 86.5 ± 20.9 kg, 31.0 ± 7.5 kg/m2) with a history of mild to severe joint and muscle pain as well as inflammation participated in a placebo-controlled, randomized, parallel-arm study. Participants donated fasting blood, completed questionnaires, rated pain in the thighs to standardized pressure, and then completed squats/deep knee bends, while holding 30% of body mass, for 3 sets of 10 repetitions on days 0, 30, and 56 of supplementation. Participants repeated tests after 2 days of recovery following each testing session. Participants were matched by demographics and randomized to ingest 125 mg/d of a placebo or ginger (standardized to contain 10% total gingerols and no more than 3% total shogaols) for 58 days. Data were analyzed by a general linear model (GLM) analysis of variance with repeated measures, mean changes from the baseline with 95% confidence intervals, and chi-squared analysis. Results: There was evidence that ginger supplementation attenuated perceptions of muscle pain in the vastus medialis; improved ratings of pain, stiffness, and functional capacity; and affected several inflammatory markers (e.g., IL-6, INF-ϒ, TNF-α, and C-Reactive Protein concentrations), particularly following two days of recovery from resistance exercise. There was also evidence that ginger supplementation increased eosinophils and was associated with less frequent but not significantly different use of over-the-counter analgesics. Conclusions: Ginger supplementation (125 mg/d, providing 12.5 mg/d of gingerols) appears to have some favorable effects on perceptions of pain, functional capacity, and inflammatory markers in men and women experiencing mild to moderate muscle and joint pain. Despite the strength and ductility of steel reinforcing bars, their susceptibility to corrosion can limit the long-term durability of reinforced concrete structures. Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcing bars made with a thermosetting matrix offer corrosion resistance but cannot be field-bent, which limits flexibility during construction. FRP reinforcing bars made with fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polymers (FRTP) address this limitation; however, their high processing viscosity presents manufacturing challenges. In this study, the Continuous Forming Machine, a novel pultrusion device that uses pre-consolidated fiber-reinforced thermoplastic tapes as feedstock, is described and used to fabricate 12.7 mm nominal diameter thermoplastic composite rebars. Simple bend tests on FRTP rebar that rely on basic equipment are performed to verify its ability to be field-formed. The manual bending technique demonstrated here is practical and straightforward, although it does result in some fiber misalignment. Subsequently, surface deformations are introduced to the rebar to promote mechanical bonding with concrete, and tensile tests of the bars are conducted to determine their mechanical properties. Finally, flexural tests of simply-supported, 6 m long beams reinforced with FRTP rebar are performed to assess their strength and stiffness as well as the practicality of using FRTP rebar. The beam tests demonstrated the prototype FRTP rebar’s potential for reinforcing concrete beams, and the beam load–deformation response and capacity agree well with predictions developed using conventional structural analysis principles. Overall, the results of the research reported indicate that thermoplastic rebars manufactured via the Continuous Forming Machine are a promising alternative to both steel and conventional thermoset composite rebar. However, both the beam and tension test results indicate that improvements in material properties, especially elastic modulus, are necessary to meet the requirements of current FRP rebar specifications. With the accelerated development of urban underground spaces, prefabricated tunnel linings have become a research focus due to their advantages in construction efficiency and cost effectiveness. However, issues such as stress concentration at joints and insufficient overall stability hinder their broader application. This study investigates a cut-and-cover prefabricated tunnel project in the Chongqing High-Tech Zone through scale model tests and numerical simulations to systematically compare the mechanical behaviors of cast-in situ linings and three-segment prefabricated linings under surrounding rock loads. The experimental results show that the ultimate bearing capacity of the prefabricated lining is 15.3% lower than that of the cast-in situ lining, with asymmetric failure modes and cracks concentrated near joint regions. Numerical simulations further reveal the influence of joint stiffness on structural performance: when the joint stiffness is 30 MN·m/rad, the bending moment of the segmented lining decreases by 37.7% compared to the cast-in situ lining, while displacement increments remain controllable. By optimising joint pre-tightening forces and stiffness parameters, prefabricated linings can achieve stability comparable to cast-in situ structures while retaining construction efficiency. This research provides theoretical and technical references for the design and construction of open-cut prefabricated tunnel linings. Full article

With the extensive application of 3D-printed composites across multiple industries, the investigation into their structural reliability under complex loading conditions has become a critical research focus. This study comprehensively employs acoustic emission (AE) monitoring, digital image correlation (DIC) measurement, and micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) visualization techniques to explore the progressive damage behavior of 3D-printed sandwich-structured composites reinforced with continuous carbon fiber sheets under three-point bending. Mechanical tests show that increasing the fiber content of face sheets from 10% to 20% enhances average bending strength by 56%, while low fiber content compromises stiffness and load-bearing capacity. AE analysis categorizes damage modes into matrix cracking (<50 kHz), debonding/delamination (50–150 kHz), and fiber breakage (>150 kHz) using k-means clustering algorithms. DIC measurement reveals significant structural deformation processes during damage progression. The AE-DIC-Micro-CT combination demonstrates an initial undamaged state, followed by damage initiation and propagation in the subsequent stages. This integrated approach provides an effective method for damage assessment, guiding the design and reliability improvement of 3D-printed composites. Full article

Nowadays, Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3D printing offers promising opportunities for the customized manufacturing of ankle–foot orthoses (AFOs) targeted towards rehabilitation purposes. Polypropylene (PP) represents an ideal candidate in orthotic applications due to its light weight and superior mechanical properties, offering an excellent balance between flexibility, chemical resistance, biocompatibility, and long-term durability. However, Additive Manufacturing (AM) of AFOs based on PP remains a major challenge due to its limited bed adhesion and high shrinkage, especially for making large parts such as AFOs. The primary innovation of the present study lies in the optimization of FFF 3D printing parameters for the fabrication of functional, patient-specific orthoses using PP, a material still underutilized in the AM of medical devices. Firstly, a thorough thermomechanical characterization was conducted, allowing the implementation of a (thermo-)elastic material model for the used PP filament. Thereafter, a Taguchi design of experiments (DOE) was established to study the influence of several printing parameters (extrusion temperature, printing speed, layer thickness, infill density, infill pattern, and part orientation) on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed specimens. Three-point bending tests were conducted to evaluate the strength and stiffness of the samples, while additional tensile tests were performed on the 3D-printed orthoses using a home-made innovative device to validate the optimal configurations. The results showed that the maximum flexural modulus of 3D-printed specimens was achieved when the printing speed was around 50 mm/s. The most significant parameter for mechanical performance and reduction in printing time was shown to be infill density, contributing 73.2% to maximum stress and 75.2% to Interlaminar Shear Strength (ILSS). Finally, the applicability of the finite element method (FEM) to simulate the FFF process-induced deflections, part distortion (warpage), and residual stresses in 3D-printed orthoses was investigated using a numerical simulation tool (Digimat-AM®). The combination of Taguchi DOE with Digimat-AM for polypropylene AFOs highlighted that the 90° orientation appeared to be the most suitable configuration, as it minimizes deformation and von Mises stress, ensuring improved quality and robustness of the printed orthoses. The findings from this study contribute by providing a reliable method for printing PP parts with improved mechanical performance, thereby opening new opportunities for its use in medical-grade additive manufacturing. This research evaluates the rheological and mechanical properties of polymer- and nanomaterials-modified bitumen by incorporating nanosilica (NSA), nanoclay (NCY), and Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA) at 5% by weight of the bitumen. The samples were prepared at 165 °C for one hour to obtain homogeneous blends. All samples were subjected to short- and long-term aging to simulate the effects of different operating conditions. The research conducted a series of tests, including consistency, frequency sweep, and multiple creep stress and recovery (MSCR) using the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR). The results showed that all modified bitumen outperformed the neat bitumen. The frequency sweep showed a higher complex modulus (G*) and lower phase angle (δ), indicating enhanced viscoelastic properties and, thus, higher resistance to permanent deformation. The BBR test revealed that the bitumen modified with NCY5% has a creep stiffness of 47.13 MPa, a 51.5% improvement compared to the neat bitumen, while the NSA5% has the highest m-value, a 28.5% enhancement compared with the neat bitumen. The MSCR showed that the modified blends have better recovery properties and, therefore, better resistance to permanent deformation under repeated loadings. The aging index demonstrated that the modified bitumen is less vulnerable to aging and maintains their good flexibility and resistance to permanent deformations. Finally, these results showed that adding 5% polymer and nanomaterials improved the bitumen’s’ performance before and after aging by reducing permanent deformation and enhancing crack resistance at low temperatures, thus extending the pavement service life and making them an effective alternative for improving pavement performance in various climatic conditions and under high traffic loads. Collar monopile foundation is a new type of offshore wind power foundation. This paper explores the horizontal bearing performance of collar monopile foundation in saturated cohesive soil through a combination of physical experiments and numerical simulations. After analyzing the deformation characteristics of the pile–soil system under horizontal load through static load tests, horizontal cyclic loading tests were conducted at different cycles to study the cumulative deformation law of the collar monopile. Based on a stiffness degradation model for soft clay, a USDFLD subroutine was developed in Fortran and embedded in ABAQUS. Coupled with the Mohr–Coulomb criterion, it was used to simulate the deformation behavior of the collar monopile under horizontal cyclic loading. The numerical model employed the same geometric dimensions and boundary conditions as the physical test, and the simulated cumulative pile–head displacement under 4000 load cycles showed good agreement with the experimental results, thereby verifying the rationality and reliability of the proposed simulation method. Through numerical simulation, the distribution characteristics of bending moment and the shear force of collar monopile foundation were studied, and the influence of pile shaft and collar on the horizontal bearing capacity of collar monopile foundation at different loading stages was analyzed. The results show that as the horizontal load increases, cracks gradually appear at the bottom of the collar and in the surrounding soil. The soil disturbance caused by the sliding and rotation of the collar will gradually increase, leading to plastic failure of the surrounding soil and reducing the bearing capacity. The excess pore water pressure in shallow soil increases rapidly in the early cycle and then gradually decreases with the formation of drainage channels. Deep soil may experience negative pore pressure, indicating the presence of a suction effect. This paper can provide theoretical support for the design optimization and performance evaluation of collar monopile foundations in offshore wind power engineering applications. Full article

Caragana korshinskii Kom. (CKB), widely cultivated in Inner Mongolia, China, has potential for silage feed development due to its favorable nutritional characteristics, including a crude protein content of 14.2% and a neutral detergent fiber content below 55%. However, its vascular bundle fiber structure limits the efficiency of lactic acid conversion and negatively impacts silage quality, which can be improved through mechanical crushing. Currently, conventional crushing equipment generally suffers from uneven particle size distribution, high energy consumption, and low processing efficiency. In this study, a layered aggregate model was constructed using the discrete element method (DEM), and the Hertz–Mindlin with Bonding contact model was employed to characterize the heterogeneous mechanical properties between the epidermis and the core. Model accuracy was enhanced through reverse engineering and a multi-particle-size filling strategy. Key parameters were optimized via a Box–Behnken experimental design, with a core normal stiffness of 7.37 × 1011 N·m−1, a core shear stiffness of 9.46 × 1010 N·m−1, a core shear stress of 2.52 × 108 Pa, and a skin normal stiffness of 4.01 × 109 N·m−1. The simulated values for bending, tensile, and compressive failure forces had relative errors of less than 10% compared to experimental results. The results showed that rectangular hammers, due to their larger contact area and more uniform stress distribution, reduced the number of residual bonded contacts by 28.9% and 26.5% compared to stepped and blade-type hammers, respectively. Optimized rotational speed improved dynamic crushing efficiency by 41.3%. The material exhibited spatial heterogeneity, with the mass proportion in the tooth plate impact area reaching 43.91%, which was 23.01% higher than that in the primary hammer crushing area. The relative error between the simulation and bench test results for the crushing rate was 6.18%, and the spatial distribution consistency reached 93.6%, verifying the reliability of the DEM parameter calibration method. This study provides a theoretical basis for the structural optimization of crushing equipment, suppression of circulation layer effects, and the realization of low-energy, high-efficiency processing. Aiming at the unclear bearing mechanism of the single-layer lining structure of high-performance fiber shotcrete under layered construction in the hard rock section of a highway tunnel, this paper studies the effect of different thickness ratios under layered construction on the flexural performance of the single-layer lining structure. Six types of thickness ratio specimens were subjected to a four-point bending test. The tests employed 3D digital image correlation technology to record and analyze the deformation and failure process of the specimens, and the calculation method of single-layer lining flexural stiffness was modified. The results indicate that the flexural ultimate load of the specimens is achieved at a thickness ratio of 2, which is 20.9% higher compared to a thickness ratio of 0. Layered construction affects the failure mode of the specimens. All specimens exhibit mixed-mode failure. However, with the increase in the thickness ratio, the percentage of flexural failure cracks gradually increases. Under layered construction, the reduction in the effective bending stiffness of fiber shotcrete beams becomes more pronounced as the thickness ratio increases. Based on these findings, the interface influence factor is proposed, and the flexural stiffness is corrected using composite beam theory. Full article

Investigating the Rheological Impact of USP Warm Mix Modifier on Asphalt Binder

USP (usual temperature pitch)-modified asphalt optimizes its rheological properties through reactions between the modifier and the asphalt. This significantly enhances the high- and low-temperature adaptability and environmental friendliness of asphalt. It has now become an important research direction in the field of highway engineering. This article systematically investigates the impact of different dosages of USP warm mix modifier on asphalt binders through rheological and microstructural analysis. Base asphalt and SBS-modified asphalt were blended with USP at varying ratios. Conventional tests (penetration, softening point, ductility) were combined with dynamic shear rheometry (DSR, AASHTO T315) and bending beam rheometry (BBR, AASHTO T313) to characterize temperature/frequency-dependent viscoelasticity. High-temperature performance was quantified via multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR, ASTM D7405), while fluorescence microscopy and FTIR spectroscopy elucidated modification mechanisms. Key findings reveal that (1) optimal USP thresholds exist at 4.0% for base asphalt and 4.5% for SBS modified asphalt, beyond which the rutting resistance factor (G*/sin δ) decreases by 20–31% due to plasticization effects; (2) USP significantly improves low-temperature flexibility, reducing creep stiffness at −12 °C by 38% (USP-modified) and 35% (USP/SBS composite) versus controls; (3) infrared spectroscopy displays that no new characteristic peaks appeared in the functional group region of 4000–1300 cm−1 for the two types of modified asphalt after the incorporation of USP, indicating that no chemical changes occurred in the asphalt; and (4) fluorescence imaging confirmed that the incorporation of USP led to disintegration of the spatial network structure of the control asphalt, explaining the reason for the deterioration of high-temperature performance.
