Toward Sustainable Energy Systems and Markets: Forecasting, Optimization, and Economic Decision-Making

Dear Colleagues,

The rapid expansion of variable forms of renewable energy calls for new market designs, robust forecasting techniques, and advanced control strategies to keep modern power systems both sustainable and economically viable. Ensuring the efficient and resilient integration of renewable energy sources is not only a technical challenge, but also a key pillar in achieving long-term energy sustainability and climate goals. This Special Issue seeks interdisciplinary contributions that bridge energy economics, energy finance, control and optimization, and broader institutional and policy perspectives to support clean-energy market integration in sustainable power systems.

We welcome not only quantitative, data-driven, and methodological approaches, but also policy-relevant and multi-perspective economic analyses that address energy market design and decision-making under uncertainty, with an emphasis on sustainability, efficiency, and resilience.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Electricity price, demand, and renewable-output forecasting;
• Risk management and derivative instruments for renewable producers;
• Design and simulation of sustainable market mechanisms and incentives;
• Model predictive control, optimal scheduling, and real-time operation of distributed energy resources;
• Data-driven methods (machine learning and statistical methods) for energy applications;
• Techno-economic assessment of PV/battery and district-energy systems;
• Policy and regulatory studies aimed at improving the efficiency and functionality of electricity markets;
• Investment and planning under uncertainty for sustainable energy transitions.

Both original research articles and review papers are welcome. We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
