Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Rural entrepreneurship is an important way to increase farmers' employment and income and improve rural industries. Rural entrepreneurial environments, including the rural natural environment, social environment, economic environment and rural entrepreneurial service environment, have an important impact on farmers' entrepreneurial activities. In addition, compared with other entrepreneurs, farmers, as a special social group, are restricted by their own experience, knowledge level, and traditional perspectives, so they need more support from a sound rural entrepreneurial environment system. However, what are the components of a perfect rural entrepreneurial environment system? How can we evaluate the entrepreneurial environment in rural areas? How can we optimize the rural entrepreneurial environment? What are the "antecedents, processes and consequences" of farmers' entrepreneurial behavior in a specific rural entrepreneurial environment? All these issues are academic and practical problems that need to be solved in promoting rural entrepreneurship. This Special Issue aims to collect original research and review articles that elaborate theories, research methods, and mathematical or empirical studies that are relevant to farmers' entrepreneurial behavior and entrepreneurial environment in rural areas considering entrepreneurial management, strategic management, sustainability and public policy. Articles investigating the theoretical and/or practical implications of entrepreneurship management are encouraged.

Employment is an important public issue related to national economy and people’s livelihood. In 2022, the global youth unemployment rate will reach 14.9%, affecting a total of 73 million people. In order to deal with the social risks brought about by large scale youth unemployment, countries around the world are taking measures to solve the employment problem of college students, the main youth employment group. In the 14th Five-Year Plan, China proposes to promote the modernization and development of agriculture and rural areas by supporting university graduates and scientific and technical personnel to enter the rural economy and start their own businesses; moreover, China also aims to achieve economic recovery in the post epidemic era through mutual promotion between the entrepreneurial choices of college students and the direction of national economic development. Through qualitative comparative analysis of 131 Chinese college students, it is found that none of the antecedents meets the requirements of sufficient and necessary conditions for consistency greater than or equal to 0.8 and coverage greater than or equal to 0.9. Further analysis shows that there are three paths for college students’ rural entrepreneurship: “resource-based, with policy guarantee and villager participation”, “policy support, villager participation” and “villagers actively participate”. The government, enterprises, villages and college students should invest more in improving policy support, building infrastructure, diversifying industrial structure, clarifying strategic positioning of villages and innovating entrepreneurial models, so as to promote the modernization of China’s agriculture and rural development and the realization of the goal of rural revitalization while solving the employment difficulties of college students. Sustainable rural development and higher income levels of a rural community can be achieved through indigenously owned resource-based corporations. The study aims to evolve the new economic model for the sustainable socio-economic development of rural areas by considering the entrepreneurial initiatives in emerging economies. It is an attempt to restore the pride of artificers and workmanship such as ‘mochi’ (cobbler), the lohar (ironsmith) the kumhar (potter) through interventions to rehabilitate their active role in creating a flexible, vibrant and responsive society. Therefore, it suggests a complete process to carry out the intervention in village communities of rural areas for their sustainable development. The entire model can be tested by collecting data from respondents; however, for this manuscript, the authors propose a solid framework with rationale. This study also proposes a model for the relevant literature named the ‘common prosperity model’. Furthermore, it has a variety of research dimensions that can be traced by the researchers, policymakers, interventionists, economists and sustainable rural development institutions. Full article

The necessity of entrepreneurship in rural area is an actual one. A smart entrepreneurial variant of contemporary village’s development could be “the smart tourist village”, to capitalize rural resources. Thus, in this research we come to a variant of contemporary village’s development, respectively “smart tourist village”, which is the basic idea of the work. To demonstrate that the notion of “smart tourist village” can be a future idea of sustainable rural entrepreneurship the steps undertaken were: the identification of the representative aspects of the villages from Maramures and of their specific resources presentation of the specific aspects; the study also made a quantitative presentation of the rural tourism infrastructure from Maramures by localities; and identifies the perception and “vision” of tourists and owners of tourist structures about Maramures tourist village as an innovative solution with benefits for tourists and locals. The information collected by using the method of qualitative case study served to sketch a possible projection such as “smart tourist village” taking into account the possible costs, return on investment, possible design and advantages.
