Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Heterocyclic systems represent a privileged scaffold in Medicinal Chemistry, as they are present in the majority of organic compounds exhibiting important and diverse biological activities. Heterocyclic compounds have demonstrated interesting pharmacological activities and very wide therapeutic applications, such as anticonvulsant, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-tumor, and anti-inflammatory activities, among many others.
New biological targets and new emergent diseases are constantly being discovered, and at the same time, heterocyclic-based compounds are found in more than 90% of novel drugs, with new anti-COVID-19 authorized drugs representing a clear example of heterocyclic-based drugs. In this context, heterocyclic chemistry and heterocyclic-based drugs need to be continuously designed and developed.
Although heterocyclic systems represent a privileged scaffold, the number of publications in this field diminished in 2022, for instance, those relating to nitrogen-containing heterocycles. For this reason, it constitutes a special field to be explored.
The main goal of this Special Issue is to bring together research from experts in this field, and we are inviting you to contribute to this Special Issue articles, perspectives, and reviews covering all new aspects related to the design, identification and access, molecular characterization, development, and pharmacological evaluation of new active heterocyclic systems.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Pharmaceuticals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
