Cover Story: Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness and involves progressive retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss and visual pathway dysfunction. Given the multifactorial pathogenesis beyond elevated intraocular pressure, neuroprotection could be considered a complementary strategy. Citicoline and nicotinamide may provide neuroprotective effects through structural, functional, and mitochondrial pathways. This study evaluated the effects of a 3-month oral combination of citicoline (400 mg/day) and nicotinamide (150 mg/day) in patients with open-angle glaucoma. Treatment improved RGC function and neural conduction, assessed by PERG and VEP, respectively, suggesting a potential synergistic action of the compounds, even at these lower and well-tolerated dosages.
