Dear Colleagues,
Oxidative stress is involved in many pathogenetic processes and it is often one of the main factors able to induce metabolic, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. For instance, it is one of the etiologic factors causing diabetes, arterial atherosclerosis and lateral amyotrophic sclerosis.
ROS and RNS play important physiologic and pathologic roles at the same time, so design and discovery of new drugs able to modulate ROS and RNS synthesis and oxidative stress in general would be very useful for the prevention and treatment of many diseases. Edaravone represents a clear example of an active heterocycle compound whose one action mechanism is based on its free radical scavenging activity.
Heterocycle systems as potential structures for free radical inhibition were basically unexplored until ten years ago. Just over one hundred papers have been published on this topic over the last ten years; for this reason, it constitutes a special field to be explored. The main goal of this Special Issue is to encourage authors to report all new aspects related to the development of new heterocycle systems that are active as free radical inhibitors.
