Special Issue Information

Dear colleagues,

Metabolomics has recently emerged as one of the most powerful tools to provide information on the end products of gene expression, thus offering a comprehensive snapshot of the biochemical landscape that allows for obtaining precise and dynamic insights into the phenotypic state of specific biological systems under variable conditions. Therefore, it can contribute to the understanding of pathogenetic mechanisms through the identification of altered molecular pathways and the discovery of novel biomarkers in different contexts. The ongoing technological advancements—particularly those based on high-resolution mass spectrometry—are empowering the analytical strategies dedicated to metabolomics, enabling the detection of an increasingly broad spectrum of metabolites within a single experiment. These capabilities can be particularly valuable for the characterization of unconventional biological samples (e.g., tears, sweat, dried blood spot) and rare pathological conditions. Moreover, metabolomics is uniquely positioned to complement other omics platforms, offering an integrated perspective for a more holistic view of biological systems. Altogether, metabolomic strategies are emerging as useful allies in precision medicine, driving biomarker discovery, defining molecular signatures, uncovering therapeutic targets, and enabling effective treatment monitoring and outcome prediction.
This Special Issue is dedicated to integrative metabolomics, mostly featuring studies on disease-related metabolomic profiling, innovative analytical approaches and workflows, biomarker discovery, and strategies for multi-omics data integration.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
