Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to contribute a research article to this Special Issue of Materials, titled “Advances in Defect Detection of Composite Materials”.
Advances in composite material development and manufacturing have resulted in an increase in the number of different composite materials in use today. As a result, there has been an increase in the need to detect defects and their evolution when such materials are in use.
As Materials aims to publish papers that advance the understanding of the structure, properties, and functions of all kinds of materials, this Special Issue will focus on composite materials and, specifically, advances in the detection and understanding of how defects evolve and affect material performance across use cases. Particular interest will be placed on multiscale defect detection.
This Special Issue aims to publish original research that advances defect detection in composites, leading to improvements in the manufacturing of these materials and allowing for the prediction of the materials’ response during use. Emphasis on the experimental validation of detection methods is of primary interest, though the use of simulations for defect prediction of defects and evolution is also encouraged.
In this Special Issue, original research articles, short communications, and reviews are welcome on research areas that may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Nondestructive evaluation advances for improved detection accuracy;
- Ultrasound testing, acoustic emission, and X-ray computed tomography advances in composite defect detection;
- Real-time defect detection during manufacturing;
- Advances in identifying the evolution of defects and their effect on performance;
- Defect detection in PMC, CMC, and MMC;
- Merging experiments, simulation, and/or machine learning for improved detection accuracy.

For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
