Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Fatigue failure is a critical concern in a wide range of industries, including structural, automotive, aeronautical, naval and locomotive, among others. Metal-based materials are commonly used in these engineering areas due to their desirable mechanical properties. However, the prediction of fatigue life remains a challenging task due to the complex nature of fatigue mechanisms and their dependence on various factors such as loading conditions, material properties, and environmental effects.

The objective of this Special Issue is to bring together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to contribute their original research and review articles, addressing the recent advances in fatigue and lifetime prediction of metal-based materials. By collating diverse perspectives and approaches, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of fatigue mechanisms, address the recent advances in lifetime prediction models, and identify strategies to enhance the fatigue performance of metal-based materials.

This Special Issue will cover a wide range of topics related to fatigue and lifetime prediction of metal-based materials, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Experimental techniques for fatigue testing and characterization;
  • Multiscale modeling and simulation of fatigue behavior;
  • Damage accumulation and crack initiation/propagation mechanisms;
  • Effect of microstructure, texture, and grain boundaries on fatigue life;
  • Size and notch effects on fatigue behavior;
  • Environmental effects on fatigue performance (corrosion, temperature, humidity);
  • Fatigue behavior of additive manufactured metallic alloys;
  • Data-driven approaches and machine learning techniques for lifetime prediction;
  • Reliability and statistical analysis of fatigue data;
  • Case studies and real-world applications of fatigue assessment and prediction.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
