New Advances in Nasopharyngeal and Oropharyngeal Cancer Treatment

Dear Colleagues,

Oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal carcinomas represent a significant therapeutic challenge for head and neck surgeons and oncologists. Unlike most head and neck tumors, which are typically solely linked to traditional risk factors such as smoking and alcohol consumption, these two tumor types may also be associated with the oncogenic activity of viruses, namely EBV and HPV. This can have significant prognostic and therapeutic implications. Another factor that complicates the treatment of these tumors is their location and the difficulty in identifying the primary tumor, especially when they arise as small microtumors in the Waldeyer’s ring, where it can be very challenging to distinguish between flogistic and neoplastic activity. Consequently, these tumors may often be misclassified as neck metastases from an occult tumor, as the primary tumor cannot always be identified. With a better understanding of the biomolecular mechanisms underlying these tumors and thanks to the medical and surgical innovations driven by scientific and technological progress, patients with these tumors can now benefit from high-quality treatments, even in the relapsed and metastatic setting. This Special Issue aims to highlight the therapeutic advances made in the treatment of these insidious head and neck tumors to ensure the best possible care for patients.
