Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an emerging global health problem with the rise of an aging patient population living with frailty. As CKD advances, exercise endurance is decreased. This is due to a combination of factors, including protein–energy wasting, uremic acidosis, and inflammatory cachexia. The combined effects from these factors lead to sarcopenia and are aggravated by a sedentary lifestyle, resulting in physical deconditioning. The concept of renal rehabilitation, which includes measures such as exercise intervention and nutrition programs for patients living with CKD, is now gradually being popularized in an increasing number of renal services. Renal rehabilitation may involve home-based therapies as well as hospital-based rehabilitation. A multidisciplinary team program could be led by nephrologists, rehabilitation specialists, dieticians, nursing specialists, pharmacists, and physiotherapists; there are concerted efforts now to find solutions in optimizing renal rehabilition care strategies for CKD patients, including individuals reaching end-stage kidney disease receiving dialysis or those who had a kidney transplantation. We present a Special Issue that provides a collection of original research studies and review articles by experts in relation to this topic.
