Dear Colleagues,

We are happy to welcome contributions to a Special Issue of IJMS, entitled “Novel Multifunctional Materials with Electrical, Catalytic, and Biological Properties”. This Special Issue eagerly welcomes novel manuscripts dealing with unpublished material and unveiling potential applications of advanced multifunctional materials.

Multifunctional materials that combine electrical, catalytic, and biological properties are at the forefront of modern scientific research, offering vast potential in diverse applications. These materials, often nanocomposites or hybrid structures, are engineered to perform multiple roles simultaneously, enhancing efficiency and functionality in various fields. Electrically conductive materials such as graphene or metal oxides can be integrated with catalytic elements like platinum or titanium dioxide. These combinations are pivotal in energy applications, notably in fuel cells and batteries, where they facilitate efficient electron transfer and catalytic reactions essential for energy conversion and storage. The electrical properties ensure effective charge transport, while the catalytic components expedite chemical reactions, optimizing overall performance. In the realm of biotechnology, incorporating bioactive molecules or structures into these materials imparts them with unique biological characteristics. For instance, adding enzymes or peptides can enable these materials to interact with biological systems, paving the way for innovations in biosensors, drug delivery, and tissue engineering. The multifunctional aspect allows these materials to respond to biological stimuli or perform specific biological functions, such as targeting pathogens or promoting cell growth.

The convergence of these properties in a single material system exemplifies the advancement in multifunctional materials, promising revolutionary advancements in medical technology, environmental sustainability, and energy systems. These materials not only push the boundaries of current technology but also open new avenues for future innovations.

For this Special Issue, we particularly welcome original manuscripts that delve into the following aspects:

  1. Innovative design and synthesis of novel multifunctional materials;
  2. Advanced characterization techniques and structure-property investigations;
  3. Application and compatibility studies of multifunctional materials.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
