Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, metabolomics has become an essential discipline in biomedical research, offering a powerful approach for understanding complex biological systems through the comprehensive analysis of small-molecule metabolites in cells, tissues, and biofluids. Unlike the other omics, metabolomics reflects the real-time physiological state of an organism, thereby serving as a direct signature of dysregulated biochemical pathways and disease biomarkers.

This Special Issue aims to explore the growing role of metabolomics in clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and nutraceutical applications.

We particularly welcome contributions that address the following topics:

  • The identification of metabolic biomarkers for early diagnosis, disease monitoring, and progression;
  • The investigation of disease mechanisms in both communicable and non-communicable diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, metabolic syndromes, and autoimmune conditions.
  • The integration of metabolomics with other omics approaches (genomics, proteomics, and microbiomics);
  • Metabolomics-based strategies for personalized medicine;
  • Nutritional and nutraceutical research focusing on the use of metabolomics to evaluate the efficacy of nutraceuticals, functional foods, or dietary interventions;
  • Preclinical and clinical studies highlighting how metabolic profiling can guide precision health approaches.
  • Pharmacometabolomics, guiding drug response prediction and the prediction of mechanisms of action and reducing adverse effects.

We invite original research, reviews, and clinical studies addressing any of these aspects of metabolomics, especially those bridging the gap between laboratory research and clinical practice. Contributions highlighting novel analytical techniques, bioinformatic approaches, and real-world applications in the clinic or nutraceutical industry are also welcome.

This Special Issue of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, titled “Application of Metabolomics in Health and Human Diseases: Diagnostic, Therapeutic, Nutritional and Nutraceutical Perspectives”, aims to provide an updated and multidisciplinary overview of metabolomics as a translational bridge between basic science, clinical practice, and preventive strategies, contributing to the advancement of personalized and sustainable healthcare.

Dr. Carmen Marino (cmarino@unisa.it) is serving as the Assistant Editor and will supervise this Special Issue.

This Special Issue is now open for submissions. If you are interested in contributing your work, please send a short abstract or tentative title to the Guest Editor or Editorial Office.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
