Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Food packaging has become an important and indispensable part of food, which has a direct or indirect impact on food quality. Traditional packaging materials are difficult to degrade, causing heavy pollution, toxicity and other shortcomings. New environmentally friendly packaging materials for the inhibition of pathogens and maintaining freshness, have significant advantages. In recent years, with the increasing awareness of environmental protection, people have put forward higher requirements on the functionality and environmental characteristics of food packaging materials.
This Special Issue will focus on the synthesis, characterization, and application of existing and novel food packaging materials, with an emphasis on their biological and molecular research. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
1. Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Food Packaging Materials
- Synthesis and performance optimization of nanomaterials, bio-based materials, and biodegradable materials.
- Structure-function relationship studies, including mechanical properties, barrier properties, and thermal stability.
2. Biocompatibility and Safety of Food Packaging Materials
- Biological effects assessment of novel packaging materials in contact with food.
- Migration behavior and health risks of nanomaterials used in food packaging.
3. Molecular Mechanisms of Biodegradable and Edible Packaging Materials
- Degradation pathways of biodegradable materials and their environmental impacts.
- Component optimization of edible packaging materials and their potential applications in food.
4. Antimicrobial and Freshness Preservation Properties of Food Packaging Materials
- Inhibitory effects and molecular mechanisms of novel packaging materials against foodborne pathogens.
- Applications of packaging materials in extending the shelf life of food products.
5. Intelligent and Active Packaging Technologies
- Response mechanisms of intelligent packaging materials and their applications in food preservation.
- Molecular mechanisms of active packaging materials, such as antimicrobial and antioxidant materials.
We are pleased to invite you to submit your original research findings for a Special Issue in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences entitled ‘Insights into Novel Food Packaging Materials: Properties, Molecular Mechanisms, and Advanced Applications’. The scope of this Special Issue includes all aspects related to food packaging and new packaging materials.
This Special Issue will mainly contain original research papers, review articles, and short communications.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
