Dear Colleagues,
We would like to invite you to participate in a Special Issue of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences entitled “New Insights into β-Subunits of the Sodium-Pump”.
Na+/K+-ATPases have been studied intensively for nearly 70 years. Nonetheless, they are still at the center of research in various disciplines. In addition to its central role related to the pumping activity of the α-subunit, a wide range of functions are related to the β-subunit of the pump. Initially, the role of the β-subunit of animal Na+/K+-ATPases has been shown as supporting protein folding and stability, as well as serving to occlude bound K+. Both old and emerging information at the molecular level strongly suggest that at least two isoforms of the β-subunit function as cell-adhesion molecules in the epithelia (β1) and as an adhesion molecule on the plasma membrane of astrocytes (β2/AMOG). In this Special Issue, our aim is to publish research and review articles describing the current knowledge and data on the structure–function relationship of the β-subunits of the Na+ pump and on protein–protein interactions that involve β1 and β2 isoforms in homotypic and heterotypic interactions. We are looking for articles that explore the roles played by β-subunits at the molecular, biochemical, physiological, pharmacological, and genetic levels and how they impact the development, normal structure and function, and pathology of epithelial and cerebral tissues.
The scope of this call for papers includes, but is not limited to:
- The structure of β-subunits as components of Na/K-ATPase.
- The role of the β-subunits in modulating the ion transport of Na/K-ATPase.
- The role of β-subunits in targeting the pump to the plasma membrane.
- The adhesive properties of β-subunits in the epithelia and nervous system.
- The participation of β-subunits in neuronal development.
- The relationship between the β-subunits of Na/K-ATPase and cancer.
- Disorders related to the β-subunits of Na/K-ATPase.
- The evolution of β-subunits in P-type ATPases.
