Innovation, Energy Transition and Safety Challenges in Road and Rail Transport Systems
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Future transportation systems are evolving through the combined effects of technological innovation, energy transition, and increasing demands for safety and sustainability. The adoption of alternative energy carriers—such as electricity and hydrogen—is transforming road mobility, promoting reduced environmental impact and enhanced operational efficiency. However, these emerging technologies also introduce new challenges related to the safety and resilience of the road network. This Special Issue aims to collect original research and review papers addressing the innovation, safety, and energy transition in road mobility. Particular attention is devoted to the study of accident and fire scenarios involving alternative energy carriers—such as electric batteries and hydrogen—especially in confined environments (e.g., tunnels and parking facilities). Contributions on conventional and advanced firefighting systems are strongly encouraged, as well as studies providing new insights into accidental events involving traditional internal combustion engine vehicles in both open and confined environments. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following:
- Road network;
- Open environments and confined infrastructures;
- Alternative propulsion systems (e.g., electric and hydrogen);
- Transport of dangerous goods and energy carriers;
- Traffic and operational safety, accident, and fire analysis;
- Experimental and numerical studies on fire, explosion, and release phenomena;
- Risk assessment, resilience, and mitigation strategies;
- Combustion of road materials;
- Concrete spalling and structural response under thermal loads;
- Firefighting systems.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Future Transportation is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
