Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue delves into advanced analytical techniques for the identification, characterization, and assessment of food contact materials (FCMs). As global concerns intensify regarding the migration of potentially hazardous substances, including Non-Intentionally Added Substances (NIAS), from packaging into food products, there is an urgent need for robust and innovative methodologies to safeguard consumer health.
The focus of this Special Issue extends beyond standard analytical methods, emphasizing cutting-edge approaches in chromatographic, spectroscopic, and mass spectrometric techniques, along with emerging non-targeted and high-throughput strategies. These methodologies are essential for accurately identifying the complex chemical profiles of FCMs, particularly when dealing with substances that may not be intentionally added but still pose a potential risk to food safety.
Key areas of focus include the following:
- Chemical Composition of FCMs: In-depth analysis of both primary and secondary substances within packaging materials, including polymers, additives, and contaminants.
- Migration Studies: Detailed investigations into how substances, including NIAS, migrate from packaging materials into food, and the associated risks to public health.
- Regulatory Challenges and Risk Assessment: Exploration of current regulatory frameworks, their limitations, and the need for updated standards to account for emerging materials and new research findings.
- Novel Solutions and Materials: The introduction of innovative packaging materials, such as biodegradable and sustainable alternatives, and the safety assessment processes required to validate their use.
- Safety Evaluation Frameworks: The development and refinement of safety assessment methodologies to ensure consumer protection, particularly in light of new, complex food packaging materials.
The increasing complexity of food packaging materials, combined with evolving consumer demands for sustainability and safety, underscores the need for this Special Issue. This collection will bridge scientific research and regulatory policy, providing a platform for discussing novel methodologies, regulatory advancements, and potential solutions to enhance the safety of food contact materials in the marketplace.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Foods is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
