Effects of Feed and Supplementation on the Metabolism, Microbiota and Immune Response of Fish

This special issue belongs to the section “Nutrition and Feeding“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The growth of global aquaculture production has now outpaced that of wild capture fisheries. This surge in activity underscores the need for innovation and dedicated efforts in developing sustainable fish feed alternatives that enhance both the growth and overall health of farmed fish.

Research is needed in areas such as alternative sources to fish meal and fish oil, the use of feed additives and supplements, and the replacement of conventional ingredients. Studies focusing on how these strategies influence fish metabolism, immune responses to common pathogens, and the modulation of intestinal microbiota across various life stages—from larvae to broodstock—are particularly welcome.

The scope for this Section includes research on the following topics:

  • Nutrition and its impact on fish physiology.
  • Nutrients and their relation to microbiota modulation.
  • Nutrigenomics.
  • Live feed and their enrichment for fish larvae.
  • Sustainable alternative fish.
  • Feeding strategies.
  • Broodstock nutrition.
  • Endocrinological aspects of supplementation or ingredient replacement.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Fishes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
