Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue addresses the critical challenge of developing sustainable aquafeeds to support the global aquaculture industry's growth. The main goal is to drive innovation that reduces reliance on finite marine resources, enhances animal health, and minimizes environmental impact. The issue’s scope broadly encompasses the entire field, from defining precise nutrient requirements for diverse species to pioneering novel feed formulations. Specific areas of interest will include but are not limited to the following:

Precision Nutrient Requirements: Defining the precise requirements for protein, amino acids, lipids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals for various aquaculture species.

Novel and Alternative Feed Ingredients: Investigating the potential of alternative protein and lipid sources, such as insect meal, single-cell proteins (yeast, bacteria, microalgae, et al), plant-based proteins, and by-product valorization from agri-food and fisheries industries. This includes assessing their nutritional value, palatability, and digestibility, etc.

Feed Additives and Functionality: Exploring the role of non-nutritive additives, including probiotics, prebiotics, organic minerals, immunostimulants (e.g., β-glucans), and phytogenics, as well as Chinese herbs and their extracts, in enhancing feed quality, growth performance, gut health, disease resistance, and stress tolerance, etc.

Environmental Sustainability: Evaluating novel feed formulations, including assessments of waste output (nitrogen and phosphorus), carbon footprint, and the overall Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of aquafeeds.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Fishes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
